A Very Happy Half Birthday To YOU!

Once Upon A Time, There Was A Little Piece of Son-shine Named Rafe
And He Was Turning...

6 MONTHS OLD!

One Cool Dude!
Rafe is the greatest baby of all time. Biased? You betch' ya

During the ultrasound, when baby became a boy, the tech went on and on about the perfections of little Rafe
Look at that perfectly defined arm. She kept calling him Hercules :)
He moved and wiggled for anyone who dared to place a hand (or rest their large furry heads) on my growing midsection
Phinn laying on the Buddha Belly
Our little man took his time coming into the world. Even when the doctor checked me into the hospital to force him to come out, he still waited 20 hours before making his grand entrance- but through it all his heart beat remained strong!
Look at those full lips! Perfect for kissing Mommy... and Mommy only ;-)

Daddy & Rafe Henry

'Going Home' Outfit from Nanna Thunell

The only 'colic' period he had lasted for 2 weeks - it would start around 4/5 in the afternoon, and lasted until 8/9 at night. We (his Daddy and I) knew to expect colic, so when it began we buckled down, ready for a long couple months of fussy-ness. 'Boy', were we lucky. After only 2 weeks our sweet angel returned, and we were so grateful!

One of the first times we captured him smiling!
At 3 months old, Rafe began sleeping through the night. For most of my life, I have always been a restless sleeper, waking multiple times a night- and when I was pregnant, that got even worse! Once Rafe arrived, although I was up with him every 2-3 hours, I was actually able to sleep until I heard him waking up for food. The first time Rafe slept through the night was the best sleep of my life! I woke up around 6 in the morning, and my heart jumped out of my chest - my baby had not woken me up yet! I scurried to the end of the bed and what do you know... there he is, arms high above his head, breathing deeply...and just perfect. I am so fortunate- I've never had to 'train' or teach Rafe to sleep through the night. He just does. Although I'm now back to my pattern of waking up every so often to check and make sure he is still healthy and breathing, and flipping him over since he likes to sleep on his belly (which just scares me to death) I couldn't be more proud of my little man.

Bumbo!
The older Rafe gets, the more toys we get to buy him! First a bumbo, then a saucer, a johnny jumper, a bigger car seat, and a high chair! Along with a million other little toys that he likes to chew on and roll after. His wardrobe has also increased, thanks to the wonderful baby shower thrown for us by the women in my Ward, and also thanks to Nanna Thunell, who goes a little crazy sometimes, but we aren't complaining!
Loves finding new things to grab and chew on!
Happy to be sitting at the dinner table with everyone at the same height!

Tries to put everything in his mouth. Yes. Everything.

It is so much fun watching him figure out how to wiggle and squirm his away around. Some people say that they don't like certain phases of a baby's life - but I have honestly enjoyed every moment with Rafe. He will smile at everyone and anyone, has the sweetest laugh, and is so smart. I look forward to the wonderful adventures yet to come.

Birthdays & Blowouts

Last Friday I celebrated my 22nd birthday.
That is very weird to say... I believe I am destined to never feel as old as I truly am.

Silly though it is to take a day off from work for your birthday at this age, I had been looking for a time where I could take a break and spend a nice long day with Rafe, and also I had just finished working a few months of Saturdays the week before, so a 3-day weekend sounded fantastic to me. We had a grand day, going to the park for a walk in our new jogging stroller (thank you Christmas bonus), my mom bought me a fancy new shirt, and I received lots of wishes for a happy birthday from friends and family. We spent the afternoon rolling around and playing with puppy Phinn. Although Phinn is very jealous of all the attention Rafe gets, he still loves little man very much and is always gentle with him.
That evening we went out to dinner at a noisy steak house, and as my sister was grabbing Rafe to feed him a bottle, she realized his bum was a little wet! I whisked Rafe off to the ladies room for a quick change... not! We were up to our elbows in pooh, and at one point only Rafe's head was left on the changing table as I lifted him by his feet to clean him up.
TMI?
Probably.
But that's what you get for reading a Mamma's blog.
What did Rafe do the entire time I was cleaning him up? Smiled, giggled, tried to nibble on his toes, and was just a gem. I love him so much. At a moment where I could have been impatient and moody, I was completely calm and happy - one, because he hadn't pooped all day and I was just glad he finally had, and two, because I just love this little guy to pieces. He's the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I had one of the best birthdays I've had since high school.

I'm so happy. I am so so so so happy. A year ago life was bleak and uncertain. I never imagined I could have the peace and perspective I have now. The last year and 3 months have definitely been the hardest of my life, but I am happier now than I have ever been. I am so grateful for my beautiful boy, who teaches me so much. I'm grateful for the family and friends I have who never gave up on me. And I'm grateful for the Gospel. It is because of my Savior that I finally feel such hope and joy. It doesn't matter what age you are, or what circumstances you come from, He is always waiting at the door.

"Ask and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; know, and it shall be opened unto you."

Bring It

It seems that every time I feel on top of the world, something happens to try and drag me right back down into despair. I'm thankful for the Book of Mormon, and so thankful for Nephi. I'm not even to the 20th chapter, and already I am overcome by the ups and downs he faced- his family at times embracing truth and light, and at others plotting to murder him. For my life, at times I feel I am getting along with all those around me, and peace fills my body, and then come the times where everything is overturned, hatred and malice are present, and I feel as though I am barely able to keep my head above water.
"Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life."

Sometimes I just want to sit down and have a good sob fest. But I just need to keep feasting and enduring. And if the devil wants to meddle, he best remember that I've always come out of trials stronger than before.
So bring it.

Stamps & Signatures

Today I sat in a room, signed a few papers, had a rather rude lady stamp each paper I signed, and handed a check to the attorney.
Within the next 2-3 weeks, a judge will sit in his court room, review the proposal, and sign some of the same papers I did.
And then I will no longer be married.
Funny tidbit- we were married about as long as we were separated.
I strongly believe this was the right decision, and I put my faith and trust in God that Rafe will grow up as healthy and happy as possible.
A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders today.
The world is mine oyster.

Choice

When I found myself at age 20, single, and pregnant, my mind flashed to the scene in Juno, when she sits her father and stepmother down to share her news. After having already confided in a friend, considered her options, and made her decision, she was fully equipped to answer the questions and concerns that came.
Oh, how I wish that was how my story began...

Never get the same phone as a sibling. And if you do, make sure you have different covers that can identify whose is whose. My sister mistakenly picked up my phone, went into the text messaging file, and of course, once she read a few lines, couldn't help to read the rest of the conversation that was taking place between Baby Daddy and I. By that night, my parents had found out from her, and the whole family was thrown into chaos. They had questions, I had no answers (besides the obvious facts… ). I lost the chance to sit with myself and actually think out how to handle the situation, before being questioned every day with, “What are you going to do now?” The horrible feelings that came when I found out about the pregnancy were nothing compared to how I felt when everyone knew what a mess I was in.

My dad has always been one to act fast and efficiently. He quickly arranged for me to meet with a social worker through LDS Family Services. This sweet lady listened to my story, understood my fears, and then told me the most beautiful thing I had heard since learning I was pregnant.

“You're life is not over".

Relief flooded through my body, the tears didn’t come so hard, and I was able to breathe a little easier. I had a choice. My life was not over, and there would be some resolution at the end of these 9 months. The social worker began to walk me through the options for those in my circumstance. Adoption, Single Parenting, and Marriage being the ‘big 3’. I was referred to the LDS Family Services adoption website, but also given material regarding the different ways to make a decision so big, and various support groups that gathered to help you follow through with whatever decision you made.

Baby Daddy and I were all over the page when it came to our relationship. Some days we were together, planning to be a family, other days I was faced with the possibility of being a single parent, and other days we were online, looking for a family that might give our baby a better life than we could.

I would like to talk a little about adoption. When I was 18, I became friends with a girl who was in the process of placing her little girl with a family she had come to know through the adoption process. At 16, my friend knew she needed to finish school, and do a little more growing up before she would be ready to raise her baby. It was a beautiful process to witness, and I consider it one of the bravest and most loving acts.

When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately thought of adoption, and did some searching online through various couple profiles. One night, I found what I thought was the perfect match. The woman was an English teacher, she had listed Anne of Green Gables as one of her favorite books, and together she and her husband seemed like a loving, crazy, and passionate couple. I was brought to tears, looking at their pictures, reading of the heartache they had experienced so far with adoption- and at that moment, I wanted to help them complete their family. However, after exchanging a few emails, they were contacted by another birth mother and decided to go down another path.

It was really hard to be 'rejected'. Of course, I knew that wasn't how I should be feeling. I hadn't been 100% committed to the idea of adoption, and still needed more information before making a decision. I knew the couple were making the right choice for them.

Up until the time of the ultrasound, a few other profiles of adopting couples caught my eye, but every time, either they had just recently adopted and their profiles were for some (annoying) reason still featured, or they already had a birth mom who was just a few weeks away from delivery. Some might say I didn't try hard enough to find a couple that would have given my baby a better life, but placing your baby is a huge decision, and my heart wasn't committed to that decision.

The turning point in our story came on May 17th, 2011, at about 9:20 am. I was laying on a chair in the ultrasound technicians room, Baby Daddy was sitting to the side, goop was piled up on my bump, and a very eclectic looking lady with long dark hair was scrolling over my stomach like a mouse on a pad, pointing out a spinal cord, legs, arms, kidney’s, and finally… well, you know what she pointed out next.

My whole world went into slow motion as she took more photos and pointed out more features of my perfectly flawless little boy, my own little son who already had my nose! I was giddy and giggly and just so amazed that I was growing a little person inside, and that little person was a boy! Everything became so real to me. I had a little son, and he was depending on me.

I made a choice, and the repercussions of that choice, though sometimes painful, have given me a happiness I had never felt, and a love that I never knew existed. I thank God every day, every hour, and every moment for my sweet little prince.
